I remember how I started my journey has a real estate agent, I started this career on October 2020.
Though it hasn't being easy, but my advice to you is that before you start this business, don't be carried away by the huge commission you'll get paid, because sometimes in this real estate business, there might be a situation whereby, for one year, you'll not get any client.
It's at this point that some real estate agent quit this business. So that is why I'll advice you not to enter this business first with the mindset of making quick cash, but enter it because you're passionate about it.
Although there are some real estate agents that I've met, and within the first month that they joined this business, they've been able to make sales.
Now when I decided to become a real estate agent, I didn't know any thing about the real estate industry. So the first thing I did was to learn about the different land documents in Nigeria.
The reason why I did that was because, I didn't want a situation whereby if a client ask me about the document behind the land I'm trying to market, I won't know what to say.
So my advice is this, read about the land documents we have in Nigeria, make sure you know their uses.
The next thing you need to do is to look for a registered real estate company to work with.
The reason is that, the real estate industry is very lucrative, therefore this has attracted so many fraudulent people, and if peradventure, you work with any real estate company that defrauds your client, you will be in trouble.
Therefore I'll advice you to work with only registered and trusted real estate company.
Becoming a great real estate agent in Nigeria is an easy task if you accompany your interest in the sector with loads of strategic work, sales skills, networking, negotiating skills and empathy.
Next is you also need to decide on the type of marketing strategy you'll use to market your properties. You can decide to use either use offline or online strategy to market your business, or you can use both.
The good news is, there are several opportunities in this sector, for some one seeking to take on a new career in this business.
You need to also be able to work on your communication, networking sales and negotiation skills.
Research and know what industry tools and technology that would enhance your job as a realtor.
What top property sites are best for listing your property in Nigeria, who has the most competitive ad rates, what tools can you use to improve your productivity and stay ahead of the competition? Like I'm currently making use of my blog, and other social media to market my properties.
Endeavor to also extend your training to social media for real estate marketing and create a strategy suitable for you to implement.
You need to be patient and optimistic in becoming a real estate agent in Nigeria. This is especially true for new entrants into the real estate industry.
The real estate agent acts as a go-between, eliminating the headache of looking for buyers or tenants for the house owner and placing them solely on the shoulders of the real estate agent.
Therefore, to be a good real estate agent, you must know how to convince or market your business to both the house owner, and the buyer.
Now in this real estate industry, you have to be trustworthy. It is very important for you to protect the interest of the your client at all times.
This can be difficult at times, especially when you need to make your own percentage, while also ensuring that the property owner also gets a fair deal.
If a client gains your trust, then you are most likely to reap the benefits from referrals from him next time which happens when the client is happy with the deal. He/she tells his/her friends and families, and they in turn tell it to others.
This type of advertisements, will boost and give your business a better exposure.
The important step to take is to first win the trust of your very first client. Continue doing this to all your clients, and with time, you would have formed a community of loyal clients that will trust you with their resources or money.
Do you need a training school to become a real estate agent in Nigeria?
My sincere answer to this question is that it's not compulsory at first, because I've met people in this real estate industry that the first month they started marketing properties as a real estate agent, they started making sales without even attending any real estate training.
What matters is are you willing to go through the process of learning everything about this industry on your own, are you curious to learn, are you patient?
You might as well be thinking how much it cost to start a career as an estate agent.
Well when I started, with my real estate company the only money I spent was just N5,000 _10,000 to register with a real estate company. So the amount of money you'll spend depends on the estate company you would like to work with.
If you're looking for a registered and trusted real estate company to work with, I can connect you with the company I partner with, just drop your message in the comment box then I'll reply you.
So if you're thinking of becoming a real estate agent in Nigeria, I'll encourage you to give it a try and if peradventure this gets tough in the process, I'll tell you not to give up be patient.
You might not make any sales immediately you get started, but that doesn't mean you won't make any sale as time goes on. When you get started just keep doing your best and seek for help where and when necessary.
